10 steps to becoming a successful freelancer

Introduction

Being a freelancer is a tough job, but it can also be very rewarding. You get to work on your own schedule and have the added benefit of making your own money. However, there are many challenges that you'll face along the way from finding clients to setting up a website or blog. Below we've outlined 10 steps that will help you become successful at being in business for yourself:

1. Create a business plan

A business plan is a document that outlines your goals, strategies and expectations for your business. It also includes financial projections, operations plan and marketing strategy. A well-written business plan will help you achieve your goals by guiding you through the steps necessary to launch a successful freelance career.

The first step in creating an effective freelance writing career is developing an outline of all the essential elements needed to get started on the right foot (or keyboard). As with any other type of project or assignment, there are several things that need to be taken into consideration before beginning work on this important document:

2. Decide on your pricing

Deciding on a price for your services is an important step in becoming a successful freelancer. You want to set a rate that's fair both to yourself and the client, but also one that reflects the value of your skills and experience.

You can use a pricing calculator like this one from Freelancer or this one from Upwork as a starting point for determining how much money you should charge per hour (or other unit of time). These calculators will also help you determine how many hours it would take to complete specific types of projects so that you have an idea of when they might be done by if given enough work at that rate.

Now let's talk about some factors that affect what kind of rates freelancers should charge:

  • How much time does it take? If someone wants me to write them an article about Pokemon Go, it won't take very long because there aren't many words involved--it's mostly just facts about the game itself along with some fun facts related specifically towards my experience playing it over these past few months since its release date last July 2016! But if I were asked instead by another company who wants me write articles about how businesses can use Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques within their own organization instead then those articles would need more research conducted before submitting final drafts which means more time spent researching online sources such as websites , blogs etc., so therefore those articles would cost more per hour since each page will require several hours' worth researching content before submitting final drafts back again ."

3. Set clear goals and objectives

The first step to becoming a successful freelancer is to set goals and objectives. These can be short- or long-term, but they should be specific and measurable so that you know when you've achieved them! For example: "I want to earn $5,000 per month by December 31st." Or: "My goal is for my freelance business to account for 50% of my income by the end of this year."

Once you have some ideas about what your goals are going to be (and how much work it will take), create a plan of action with specific steps on how you're going to achieve each one--and then write down all those plans somewhere where they can serve as reminders throughout the year or quarter. Make sure everyone knows about them too--it's important not just because others may help support us along our way but also because writing things down makes them more real than just thinking about them in our heads! Finally, reward yourself every time something significant happens towards reaching one or more of these milestones; this will motivate us even further while encouraging us through any tough patches along the way!

4. Select a name for your business

Once you've decided to launch your own freelancing business, the next step is to choose a name for your business. A good name should be easy to remember and reflect the type of work that you do (for example, if you're a web designer then "Web Designs by Bob" might not be as effective as "Bob's Web Design").

A great way to come up with ideas is by looking at other people's names in your industry or field. You can also check whether any similar names are already taken on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. If so, this may mean that others will have difficulty finding or contacting you through those sites which could lead them away from using other services that require connections via those platforms such as email accounts or domain names registered under certain domains (more information on this later).

5. Create your brand identity

Brand identity is the name, symbol, logo and other visual elements that represent your business. A strong brand identity helps customers recognize you and your products. It also helps you stand out from your competition.

A brand identity should be consistent across all channels so it's easy for people to identify with what they see on social media or in person as well as online. In addition to consistency between platforms, an effective freelancer brand will include:

  • A unique name that describes what type of work you do (e.g., "The Writing Coach")
  • A memorable slogan or catchphrase (e.g., "A better way to write")

6. Make sure you have a website or blog

A website or blog is the best way to promote yourself as an expert in your field and build credibility with potential clients.

It's also important for capturing leads, since many people will be looking for more information before they hire you, so having a website allows them to contact you directly rather than through email exchanges or phone calls.

Your website should include:

  • A mission statement explaining who you are, what services/products/information you provide and why people should choose those services/products/information over others like them on the market today
  • Your resume (or CV) outlining your experience in this field of work along with any certifications or training courses taken related specifically towards this line of business

You may also want add some testimonials from past clients if possible!

7. Find your first clients

Finding your first clients is one of the hardest parts of freelancing. You may have a great portfolio, but if nobody knows about it, then what good is it?

One way to get clients is by going through a job board like Upwork or Freelancer.com (which we'll talk about later). Another option is to reach out directly to companies that could use your services and ask them if they'd be interested in hiring someone like you for their project(s). This can be especially effective if there are companies where you used to work and still have connections there--they might be more likely to give you work because they know and trust who they're hiring!

8. Set up a digital marketing strategy for free or cheap

You will need to set up a digital marketing strategy in order to attract clients, no matter what type of freelancing you do. In this day in age, people are constantly on the internet and are looking for services like yours. You can use social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter as well as paid advertising platforms like Google Adwords or Bing Ads (which are both free) to market yourself as an expert in your field and attract new clients who need your services.

Once people start finding out about what you offer through these methods, then they'll want to know more about it--but how will they contact me? That's where having an email list comes into play! An email list allows potential customers who have found out about my business through one form of marketing (like social media) but haven't yet decided whether or not they're interested enough yet -to sign up so that when/if those people are ready later down the road when deciding whether or not this could be something useful then I'm already there waiting with open arms ready for engagement :)

9. Identify your resources and expenses for growth

Identifying your resources and expenses is an important step in being successful. You need to know what it costs you to run your business, so that you can plan for growth in advance.

  • Identifying Your Resources:
  • What do I have? What resources do I need? These are both questions that freelancers should ask themselves when considering growth opportunities. For example, if one of your goals is to hire an assistant or virtual assistant (VA), then knowing how much money the role will cost per hour will allow you to make an informed decision about whether hiring someone would be worth the investment for your business.
  • Identifying Expenses:

Once we've identified our resources, we can begin thinking about how much money each resource costs us on average over time--and whether those costs will increase with expansion into new markets or new products/services offered through our businesses

10. Engage in continuous self-improvement and learning

The best freelancers are always learning, whether it's through books, online courses, conferences and seminars or simply by practicing their craft more often than their peers. They also seek feedback from clients on what they could be doing better (and yes - even from people who aren't clients!)

This isn't just about improving your skills: it has an important role to play in keeping you motivated when times get tough as well as providing opportunities for regular reflection on how you can improve your work flow or work-life balance.

Conclusion

Being a freelancer is a great way to make money and work on your own terms. But it can be difficult at first, especially if you're not sure where to start or what steps need taken in order for your business to succeed. This article will give you some helpful tips on how to become successful as a freelancer so that when the time comes for us all (or at least me), we'll know what it takes!
